GUIDANCE ON NHS CHARGES FOR OVERSEAS VISITORS
Important Information for Overseas Visitors About NHS Charges
If you are visiting the UK or do not usually live here, some NHS hospital treatments may not be free. This includes care you are referred for by your GP (secondary care).
Before your treatment, the hospital will check whether you are eligible for free NHS care. If you are not eligible:
- You may be asked to pay for your treatment
- Non-urgent treatment could be delayed or cancelled until payment is arranged
- Charges can still apply even for urgent referrals
This can sometimes come as a surprise, so it’s important to be aware early to avoid stress or delays in your care.
If you are unsure about your eligibility or possible costs, you should contact the hospital’s Overseas Visitors Team. They can explain what charges may apply and what documents you might need.
Getting this information early can help you plan your care and avoid unexpected costs.
